Police shot and killed a man who allegedly broke into one of the rooms of the St. Theresa’s College in Cebu City.

The man, who was not immediately identified, died from a gunshot wound in the chest.

Police said the man was spotted scaling the school’s Gate 6 on Juana Osmeña St., barangay Kamputhaw by the school’s security guard, Elje Payot.

The man then barged into a room by breaking its glass window.

Payot told police that he tried to stop the man but the intruder allegedly fired at him.

Payot, who was not hit, sought help from the police.

Operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics, City Intelligence Branch and Motorcycle-Riding Unit responded to the alarm.

Police tried to convince the man to surrender but the intruder allegedly threw pieces of broken glass at them.

The man later tried to escape by going over the fence and running to the parking area of a nearby bank.

Police gave chase but the man fired shots at them that resulted in a shootout.  Police said a .22 caliber revolver with three bullets and two spent shells in its cylinder was recovered from the man’s possession.  The man was brought to the Cebu City Medical Center where he was declared dead.
