MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rocked Surigao del Sur early Friday morning, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
According to state seismologists, the temblor occurred at 12:04 a.m. with an epicenter 22 kilometers southwest of the town of Madrid.
The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 66 kilometers, Phivolcs said in its bulletin.
Instrumental intensities were recorded by the agency in these places:
Intensity IV – Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte
Intensity III – Surigao City, Surigao del Norte
Intensity I – Talakag, Bukidnon; Abuyog and Mahaplag, Leyte
State seismologists warned the public about damage and aftershocks following the earthquake.
