Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama yesterday padlocked the gate leading to the Inayawan landfill, affirming his administration’s pledge to close the site for dumping garbage.
Jade Ponce, chairman of the Land Management Council, said the closure is in keeping with Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 that mandates local government units (LGUs) to implement waste segregation and bans open dumpsites..
Ponce said the landfill had exceeded its capacity, encouraging scavengers from outside the city to trespass into the area.
With the landfill closure, he said the rehabilitation may start within the year.
The city’s garbage will be transferred to the landfill site in barangay Pulpogan, Consolacion town.
