More traffic personnel were fielded at the South Road Properties (SRP) after Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama threatened to close it because of several vehicular accidents.
City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) operations chief Joy Tumulak said that they have reduced the speed limit from 60 kph to 30 kph.
Citom personnel in the area will call the attention of motorists who violate the new speed limit.
Records from the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) show that every year, an average of 200 accidents involving motorists happen in the SRP.
Yesterday morning, another vehicular accident was recorded by Citom.
Tumulak said Bryan Obeso from Toledo City, rammed a center island near the junction going to the Mambaling access road.
Tumulak said traffic personnel will use sirens to call the attention of speeding motorists.
But Citom does not have speed guns to measure the speed of passing vehicles.
There were plans to acquire speed guns but Citom has not identified where to source the funds to buy the equipment complete with global positioning system, radar and camera which was estimated to cost P400,000.
“People don’t follow the speed limits. It’s all about compliance,” said Citom executive director Victor Caindec.
Last year, a total of 245 vehicular accidents were recorded by Citom in the SRP. A total of 110 involved motorcycles. Two ended in deaths.
In 2013, there were 280 vehicular accidents (101 motorcycle accidents and four deaths), 272 in 2012 (106 motorcycles and two deaths) and 256 in 2011 (106 motorcycle accidents).
This prompted Mayor Rama’s threat to close the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) in the SRP if the Citom, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 and the SRP Management Office do not institute safety measures in the area.
