A casino financier was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding assailants while driving his car in Mandaue City at dawn yesterday.
Nestor Jumao-as was heading home when he was ambushed around 4 a.m. on the corner of A.S. Fortuna and M.C. Briones Streets.
The victim was the brother of Roy Jumao-as, the former mayor of Hindang, Leyte who was ambushed along Gen. Maxilom Avenue in 2004.
Nestor, who was driving a Mitsubishi Mini Pajero with plate number PHF-969, stopped on a red light at the intersection when a motorcycle with two men on board stopped at the left side of the victim’s vehicle, said Senior Insp. Zenaido Sanchez.
As Nestor’s vehicle started to move when the traffic light turned green, the backrider of the motorcycle drew a gun and repeatedly shot the victim.
Nestor was still able to drive a few meters from where he was shot before his car rammed the center island.
The assailants drove off after the attack.
Police recovered 11 spent shells of a .45 caliber pistol in the crime scene.
Sanchez said investigators learned that Nestor was frequenting the Waterfront Mactan Hotel and Casino.
Police reviewed the footage of the hotel’s security camera and the ones installed at the intersection where the victim was waylaid.
Sanchez said the footage showed two men on a motorcycle who wore full-faced helmets tailing Nestor.
The motorcycle’s plate number was unclear because the area was dark.
The victim’s told police that she could not recall her husband telling her about a threat in his life or if someone was holding grudges against him.
Police said an investigation to determine the motive of the killing is in progress.
