The family of slain Special Action Forces (SAF) police commando PO2 Windel Candano is still waiting to receive financial assistance from the national government.
Candano’s wife Michelle said she was counting on the government to fulfill its promise to provide P44,000 burial assistance to her family.
She told Cebu Daily News that she needs to pay P117,000 to cover the burial expenses.
Candano will be buried this week. The Candano family contacted the staff of Interior and Local Governments Secretary Mar Roxas to follow up on the assistance.
“Dili na baya me maka huna-huna sa mga ing-ana nga butang kay tungod sa among daghang gi huna-huna pud karon (We cannot think about these details because of what we’re going through),” Michelle said.
Tragedy
Dumanjug Mayor Nelson Garcia said in a text message to Cebu Daily News that the municipal government extended P20,000 cash assistance to the Candano family and will give additional cash assistance soon.
Michelle said the family received a sack of rice, boxes of noodles and canned goods from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-7) the other day.
Michelle said her son Sian Gabriel, a grade one student of Colegio Del Sto. Niño will be given special examinations by his teachers to give him time to recover from the tragedy.
He was excused from attending classes after he was seen crying during the flag ceremony.
Michelle was also excused from work in a government postal office where she processes the payroll of employees.
She said she has not received any updates yet on the investigation of the Jan. 25 clash from the PNP.Chief Supt. Prudencio Bañas, Police Regional Office (PRO-7) chief, refuted reports of a mass leave of police officers, saying their operations are unaffected in the wake of the tragedy.
