NINE barangay captains from Daanbantayan town in northern Cebu have asked Gov. Hilario Davide III and Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale to help settle the conflict between Mayor Augusto Corro and the town council so they could avail of the World Bank grant for the rehabilitation of typhoon-stricken areas.
Bakhawan Barangay Captain Bernardito Luche and eight others believe that politics is behind the move of the municipal council not to approve the resolution allowing the mayor to avail of the World Bank’s Support for Strategic Local Development and Investment (SSLDI) project.
The World Bank allotted $250 million for post-Yolanda rehabilitation and the LGU needs to put up a 10-percent counterpart fund for the total cost of their rehabilitation project. Corro intends to take out a loan amounting to P885 million.
The projects he planned to implement include P500-million worth of drainage system, P55 million for the purchase of heavy equipment, P200 million for the relocation of municipal hall, P20 million for the wet market, P70 million for solid waste management.
Luche was with the barangay captains of Tagpilon, Pangpang, Bitoon, Bagay, Malbago, Dalingding, Baterya and Talisay.
Last week, Corro also sought the Capitol’s help to mediate between him and the councilors.
Davide said they will find a way to meet with the two parties separately and hear their sides.
The governor is hopeful that the conflict between the council and the mayor will be resolved soon.
