Balamban, Cebu— Whether its football or athletics, Mandaue City’s Julian Cabatingan sure knows how to win.
Cabatingan, a neophyte track and field athlete but a regular member of the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles elementary football team, blasted the competition at the Exasperanza S. Binghay Memorial Sports
Oval, to win the gold medal in the elemenatry boys high jump in the ongoing Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet yesterday, here.
Cabatingan, of Borbon, northern Cebu, cleared 1.45 meters for the gold in the event he just trained for three months. He was discovered by SHS-AdC’s athletics head coach Priscilliano Capangpangan through the latter’s physical education class.
The 12-year-old Cabatingan, actually tied with Cebu City’s Jake Angelo Dagatan of the University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department and Negros Oriental’s Joshua D. Garces but won the gold with fewer tries.
Cabatingan’s Mandaue City teammates, Shen Camay and Rogelio Miguel Tremedal also won a gold each. Camay topped elementary girls shot put (8.17 meters) while Tremedal ruled the secondary boys archery 40-meter event.
NIÑOS STRIKE TOO
Meanwhile, the Cebu City Niños also asserted their might yesterday.
Cebu City’s secondary boys wrestling squad secured three gold medals at the Saint Francis Academy’s Dominic and Fe Mancuso gymnasium.
Emmanuel Darren Francis Lauron won gold in the 54-kilogram division, Jade Christian Mendez topped the 56kgs class and Jireth Al Martin Duarte won the 58kgs gold.
In athletics, Jan Moses Estrada won the Niños’ lone gold in athletics when he ruled the secondary boys’ shot put in 11.98 meters, while Vincent Villa added another gold in secondary boys archery 30-meter event.
Another gold medalist was Bohol’s Engelbert Avenido of the President Carlos P. Garcia Technical Vocational School, who cleared 1.74 meters in secondary boys high jump.
In volleyball, the Niños secondary boys logged two victories in as many days, beating Bogo City and Danao City for a 2-0 (win-loss) record. The Niños’ secondary boys sepak takraw team also beat Bogo City.
Cebu City’s secondary boys basketball team beat CVIRAA co-host Toledo City, while its elementary dribblers coughed up two wins at the Buanoy covered court against Talisay and Mandaue.
The city’s elementary boys batters meanwhile, defeated Toledo City at the Cebu Industrial Park Developers, Inc. grounds in Arpili, Balamban.
Meanwhile, the Cebu Province athletics bets bagged two gold medals while Negros Oriental also won two golds via girls wrestling and long jump.
