Garbage collected from Mandaue City’s 27 barangays will be segregated first in their area before these are brought to a transfer station in the former Umapad dumpsite.
Engr. Ricardo Mendoza, head of Mandaue City Hall’s City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), said this would ensure that only residual waste will be delivered to the Consolacion landfill site, thus reducing the city’s garbage volume.
Mendoza said garbage trucks from the city’s 27 barangays indiscriminately dispose of their garbage at the Consolacion private landfill without segregating it resulting in 450 tons of garbage dumped into the site daily.
By reducing the volume of garbage, Mendoza said they hope to reduce payment to P1.5 million a month. The Umapad dumpsite in Mandaue City was closed in 2010.
The Consolacion landfill facility charges P700 per ton of garbage.
Material recovery
Mendoza admitted that the city government failed to monitor the segregation of garbage at the barangay level.
He said this would ensure that only segregated garbage will be brought to the Umapad transfer station before it is delivered to the Consolacion landfill facility.
“I ordered the barangays to stop delivering at the facility because it costs the city a lot to pay for the garbage when we can reduce it,” Mendoza said.
He said the city government is building a material recovery facility (MRF) at the Umapad landfill so plastics can still be recycled or sold to companies engaged in the conversion of waste to fuel.
Councilor Ernie Manatad, who heads the Association of Barangay Councils, said the move will reduce fuel and maintenance expenses of every barangay.
