LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — The Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) was already granted permission by the Lapu-Lapu City Government to start digging and pipe-laying activities for the city’s water desalination project.
The project will start on Thursday, October 5, 2023, and will cover a 3,000-meter stretch from Barangays Basak to Marigondon.
MCWD has allocated P120.5 million for the said desalination project.
On Tuesday, MCWD General Manager Edgar Donoso, Assistant General Manager for Technical Services, Lawyer Jorge Gabriente, and acting department manager Allan Chu, paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan.
MCWD will soon be distributing desalinated water, seawater converted to fresh water, through their supplier, Mactan Rock, and Filinvest Development Corporation Utilities, Inc. (FDCUI).
Under the project, Mactan Rock’s desalination plant will supply 15,000 cubic meters of desalinated water, while FDCUI will supply 30,000 cubic meters of desalinated water.
Chan, however, asked MCWD not to add to the mounting traffic congestion in the area.
Donoso assured Chan that they would only work at night and clear the area by daybreak to ensure smooth traffic flow during the daytime.
Currently, there are road concreting and drainage projects in the area, which also contribute to traffic congestion.
The mayor also wants MCWD to start digging in front of the Mactan Island Memorial Garden to Marigondon National High School, to clear the area on November 1 and 2 or during the observance of All Saints Day and All Souls Day.
People are expected to crowd the cemetery during those days.
The project is expected to be completed in more or less 300 working days. /rcg
