CEBU CITY, Philippines — A chess competition this weekend, October 14 and 15, 2023, is expected to bring in 150 individual players and 50 teams, who will compete in the team event.
This is according to one of the organizers, National Arbiter (NA) Kevin Yap.
Yap said that these would be because of the generous cash prizes awaiting the winning teams in the competition called the Rising Chess Unlimited Developmental Program at the CCC Chess Club in Robinsons Galleria at the North Reclamation Area in Cebu City.

Three-man team competition, cash prizes
Compared to other local chess tilts in Cebu, this one features a rare three-man team competition for woodpushers with an average of 2050 ELO Ratings, to ensure the competitiveness of the tournament.
The champion team will take home a whopping P30,000 purse, while the second placers receive P20,000. The third placers will pocket P10,000, while the fourth and fifth placers in the team event will get P7,000 and P5,000 respectively.
The sixth to 10th placers won’t go home empty handed as they will receive a consolation prize of P3,000.
The team event will feature a seven-round Swiss team system format.

Call to players, teams to join chess tilt
“We’re calling out all chess players and teams in Cebu to compete in this exciting tournament this weekend. It will be a fun and challenging experience for everyone,” said Yap, the younger brother of International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap.
So far, National Master (NM) Rommel Ganzon and Allan Pason of the Toledo Xignex Trojans have enlisted in the individual category.

Other chess tilt categories
Besides the team event, this tournament will also have an open individual category for elite, senior, lady, and kids.
The format has a nine-round Swiss system competition with 15 minutes starting time and five second increments.
The top woodpusher in the open division will receive P5,000, while P3,000 goes to the second placer, and P2,000 for the third placer. The fourth to 10th placers will also receive cash prizes.
Also, special awards goes top the top senior, top lady, top 14-under, top 12-under, and top 10-under woodpushers will be handed out by the organizers from the Cebu School of Chess and Cebu Chess Club.
