An ordinance to declare natural caves in barangay Buhisan, Cebu City as a cultural and historical site is being lobbied by Cebu City Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella who visited the area yesterday.
Labella said he wants the city government to help preserve the caves and will invite city officials to visit the caves and see for themselves its natural beauty.
He also said American World War II veterans want to visit the country on March 22.
Labella, who chairs the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission, said the Buhisan caves were a viable tourist spot espcially for war veterans.
Local residents told him that 10 caves in the area were used as camp sites of Japanese soldiers during World War II.
“The cave has a lot of chambers and there wis a water source inside the caves. It is believed that the Japanese chose the Buhisan caves since it is abundant in water,” Labella said.
He also noticed the presence of birds locally called ‘sayaw’ inhabiting the caves.
Buhisan barangay chairman Gremar Barrete said they are developing the site as a destination for visitors and trekkers.
