Visayan Electric: Leading the Way in Mangrove Reforestation for Environmental Protection

As part of its commitment to protect and preserve the environment, Visayan Electric has led the planting of more than 1,000 mangrove propagules along the coast of Barangay San Isidro in the municipality of San Fernando, Cebu.

This activity that we are doing today is just a small effort compared to what our environment, specifically these mangroves, have done for us.

More than 100 employees from Visayan Electric, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) One to Tree, the local government unit of Barangay San Isidro, and the San Isidro Fisherfolks Association, participated in the activity held on Saturday, October 21. This is the fourth year that Visayan Electric has planted mangroves in San Isidro, San Fernando, a host community of one of its substations.

Engr. Raul Lucero, the president and COO of Visayan Electric, expressed his gratitude to all participants for dedicating their time to environmental improvement. “This activity that we are doing today is just a small effort compared to what our environment, specifically these mangroves, have done for us,” he said.

Lucero also shared how the mangroves protected the coastal area and its residents from the wrath brought by Typhoon Odette two years ago.

In her planting demonstration, RAFI’s Partnership Officer Arriane Magtarayo highlighted the importance of planting the right species of mangroves along our coasts. “We are using Rhizophora and Avicennia to ensure higher planting success rates, a critical factor in mangrove planting.”

The recent activity reinforces Visayan Electric’s long-standing commitment to environmental protection and preservation. Just last month, the distribution utility also conducted a tree planting activity at the Buhisan Watershed Forest Reserve located in Barangay Buhisan in Cebu City. Volunteers planted more than 3,000 tree seedlings during the activity.

Visayan Electric’s dedication to the environment not only enriches the local ecosystem but serves as an example of how corporate entities can lead the charge in environmental conservation.
