Cebu under Signal No. 1 as Kabayan nears Mindanao

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The entire Cebu has been placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 on Sunday, December 17, due to Tropical Depression Kabayan.

The state weather bureau, in its severe weather bulletin issued at 5 p.m. on Sunday, included the island province in the list of areas covered by TCWS No. 1.

Earlier, they hoisted Storm Signal No. 1 in Camotes Island only, which is also in northern Cebu.

Areas under TCWS No. 1 can expect strong winds, with minimal to minor impacts.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported that Kabayan has maintained its strength as it moves in a westward direction in the east of Mindanao.

It still packs wind with speeds of up to 55 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Kabayan’s eye or center was located 385 kilometers East of Davao City, Davao del Sur or 315 kilometers East Southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

The tropical depression is also forecasted to make landfall either in Surigao del Sur or Davao Oriental between late Sunday evening or Monday dawn.

Kabayan will also bring heavy rainfall in various regions, including Central Visayas, Pagasa added.

There are now 22 areas covered by Storm Signals.
