Roro Vessel catches fire

A PASSENGER roll-on roll-off (RORO) vessel caught fire while undergoing repair in a shipyard in barangay Tayud, Consolacion town, northern Cebu yesterday afternoon.

The fire damaged the engine room of M/V Melvin Jules of Sta. Clara Shipping Lines which was docked at Nagsaka Shipyard, said Fire Insp. Josephus Alburo, the town’s fire marshal.

The fire broke out at 4:20 p.m. It was contained in 20 minutes.

Fire damage was pegged at P100,000.

Alburo said someone was doing welding work above the engine room.

Embers may have ignited the fire after falling on crude oil, which was left in an open container during the clean up at the engine room.

No one was injured in the incident.

M/V Melvin Jules was plying the Masbate-Pio Duran in Albay route before it was dry-docked for a month now.
