Mandaue City Mayor’s Cup underway

IN PREPARATION for its upcoming fiesta celebration in honor of St. Joseph on May 8, Mandaue City is holding its 8th Mayor’s Cup sporting event at different venues around the city.

The Mayor’s Cup features different sporting events participated by teams from the barangays of Mandaue City. It actually started last April 12 at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex with a series of presentations in the sport of arnis and karatedo followed by the start of games in basketball.

According to sports committee co-chairman Stephen Jumao-as, the event aims to foster sportsmanship and camaraderie among players within the different barangays. The sporting event is headed by Mandaue City vice mayor Glenn Bercede.

Aside from basketball, tournaments that are also ongoing are indoor volleyball and dayon-dayon volleyball. Other sporting events to be played are table tennis, lawn tennis, footsal, arnis, chess, swimming, karatedo and boat racing.

Most of the events will be played at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex. Swimming will be held at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in barangay Canduman, karatedo will be held at the Insular Mall in barangay Tabok while boat racing, which is tentatively set on May 10, will be held on the Mactan Channel starting beneath the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

There will also be a fun run that will start 4 a.m. at the Parkmall on May 3. It is spearheaded by the Mandaue City Sports Commission and the Mandaue Runners Club (MRC).

Jumao-as also said that championship games of some sporting events will be held after the fiesta celebration.
