Reigning Philippine Super flyweight champion Melvin “Top Gun” Gumban expects a tough fight tomorrow night when he faces former WBC Youth World Super Flyweight champion Rene “Commander” Dacquel in the main event of ALA-Cobra Tunay Na Lakas fight card at the Super Metro Lapu-Lapu City open parking area.
Despite sporting an unbeaten record of 19 wins with 10 knockouts, Gumban is not taking Dacquel (13-4-1,5KOs) lightly.
“I have to do everything I can to win this fight impressively because I am aiming to fight for a regional title this year,” Gumban said in the press conference yesterday at the Sugbahan Restaurant along A.S Fortuna St. in Mandaue City. “I will do everything to knock him out.”
This will serve as Gumban’s second time to spearhead an ALA-Cobra Tunay Na Lakas boxing fight card. Last January, he clinched the Philippine Super flyweight title by knocking out Bukidnon’s Weljan Ugbaniel in the first round at the open parking area of Gaisano Country Mall in Banilad, Cebu City.
Gumban, the pride of Escalante City, Negros Occidental, is known for a tactical and relentless boxer inside the ring and his powerful punches was recently developed, according to his trainer Peter Cuizon.
“Because of our rigid training, he was able to develop his power and add it up to his arsenal making him a more complete boxer at his age. On Saturday night expect another explosive performance from Gumban,” Cuizon said.
