A MAN wanted in Zamboanga del Sur for double murder and multiple attempted murder charges was killed in a shootout with police in barangay Canjulao, Lapu-Lapu City.
Edwin Degamo was in hiding for 13 years before police were able to track him down Thursday afternoon.
Operatives of the Provincial Intelligence Branch and their counterparts from the Mahayag Police Station in Zamboanga del Sur went to Canjulao past 3 p.m. to serve a warrant of arrest.
The warrant was issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Jaime Caberte of Branch 23 in Zamboanga del Sur.
It was 3:15 p.m. when police spotted Degamo.
When police tried to serve the warrant, Degamo allegedly whipped up a gun, fired shots but missed his targets.
Police returned fire. The gunfight stopped when Degamo fell to the ground with four gunshot wounds in the body.
Degamo was brought to the Lapu-Lapu City Hospital where he was declared dead.
Police recovered a .38 revolver with five bullets.
Degamo was a suspect in the killing of two sisters aged 8 and 5 in May 2002.
Chief Insp. Homer Dumalag, station commander of Mahayag Police Station, said Degamo was allegedly a member of the Kuratong Baleleng Group.
