CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu City Government has expressed its full support to host the upcoming 2024 Palarong Pambansa.
“If we have done it to Sinulog, I don’t find any reason why we cannot extend our wholehearted support,” Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said during the flag ceremony on Monday, Feb. 5.
The mayor urged all city department heads to collaborate for a successful event, emphasizing the need to continue dedicated efforts.
“Let’s continue to do our job,” Rama said.

Rama and Vice President Sara Duterte already sealed the deal for the city’s hosting of the 64th Palarong Pambansa following the signing of a memorandum of agreement on Friday, Feb. 2.
“We are very thankful. From the bottom of my heart, on behalf of the entire Cebu… since 1994, the last Palarong Pambansa in the City of Cebu. And now, 2024… it shall be done,” Rama said during his opening statement.
‘Word-class hosting’
Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) has anticipated Cebu City hosting a ‘world-class’ sports event.
DepEd Assistant Secretary for Field Operations Dr. Francis Cesar Bringas emphasized the need for international standards in facilities like the track oval, swimming pool, baseball diamonds, and courts.

“We really monitor and inspect the facilities to meet the international standards from the track oval to the swimming pool, baseball diamonds, and whole courts. We’re trying to coordinate with them closely because we want a world-class staging of the Palarong Pambansa. We don’t anything less from Cebu City,” Bringas said.
While the Palarong Pambansa’s scheduled for August 2024 in the current school calendar, there’s no final date yet, and adjustments may occur, according to Bringas. | Reports from Pia Piquero and Glendale Rosal
