Cubacub Martial Arts Club tops Mayor’s Cup arnis tilt

MANDAUE City emerged champions in the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC)-sanctioned 8th Mandaue Mayor’s Cup arnis competition over the weekend at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.
The Cubacub Martial Arts Club, Inc. from Mandaue City hoisted the championship trophy after garnering a total of 67 medals.
POC official and arnis president Raymond Velayo and his son, Richmond, also the secretary-general of the association, were in hand to observe the event.
Velayo handed the trophy to the winning team. Seven year-old Christel Bihag, the youngest member of the team and daughter of Cubacub barangay captain Almario Bihag, received the trophy.
The University of Cebu arnis team of Cebu City finished second place with with 34 medals followed by the Lapu-Lapu arnis team, which finished with 10 medals.
Velayo also graded the tournament as “excellent” in the level of international standards.
Meanwhile, Velayo reminded athletes not to forget the values learned while competing in arnis. He said he’d prefer values formation rather than medals and trophies.
Velayo, after seeing the matches, also praised the tournament, which he described as “excellent” in terms of international standards.
A total of 12 clubs participated the event, including thise from the Borbon Eskrima Balintawak Arnis Club and two other clubs from the cities of Danao and Toledo. /Cebu Technological University intern Marc Eric Cosep with a report from the Mandaue News Service
