The much-awaited new Golf GTI was launched by Volkswagen Cebu at its showroom last April 23. Produced in 1974, the Golf has been the recipient of several awards globally such as the 1992 and 2013 European Car of the Year, 2013 World Car of the Year, 2013-2014 Car of the Year Japan, the first and only non-Japanese car to win the prestigious award, and Motor Trends 2015 Car of the Year among others.
The Grand Tourer Injection, popularly known as GTI, was first introduced in 1976 in the 1st generation Golf. Now on its 7th generation, it combines technological leadership and uncompromised performance, making it the ultimate sportsman within the Volkswagen family. With its classic and premium design, the Volkswagen Golf has both defined and redefined the hot hatch for almost 40 years.
During the event, Volkswagen Cebu General Manager Tito Solomon was thrilled to launch the new Golf GTI to the Cebu market. “I am proud to introduce the latest generation Golf GTI, which is the perfect car for Filipinos who seek function, performance and excitement. The Golf GTI is indeed a sports car with true style and performance, one that is often copied, never equaled. That’s the power of German Engineering.”
The Golf GTI is equipped with a 2.0 turbocharged stratified injection engine with a maximum output of 220 Ps at 4,500-6,200 rpm and a maximum torque of 350 Nm at 1,500-4,400 rpm; a 6-speed dual shift gear transmission; and, sports suspension.
Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) with XDS plus technology, engine drag torque control (MSR), electronic parking brake with auto hold, rear view camera with 8-channel park distance control, driver alert system, airbags (driver, passenger, driver knee, front side and curtain) are some of the safety features of the Golf GTI.
On the exterior, the Golf GTI comes with the GTI package of bumpers, grille, tail lamps, spoiler, dual tailpipes, and 18-inch Austin alloy wheels. Bi-Xenon headlamps with daytime running lights (DRL) and, dynamic headlamp control complete the GTI look. Inside, it is also stocked with GTI premium sport seats with “Clark” material, GTI steering wheel with paddle shifts; GTI shift knob, stainless steel pedals, scuff plates, and trim; keyless-go entry/exit with push start; interior ambient lighting; and, a climatronic 2-zone air-conditioning system.
The Golf GTI is available in five colors: Oryx White Pearl, Tornado Red, Night Blue, Limestone Grey, and Deep Black Pearl.
Other than the Golf GTI, the sleek newly-introduced Volkswagen luxury SUV Touareg Sport Edition and the simply irresistible Polo Hatchback were also presented in the showroom.
