Priest escapes unscathed in Sudlon road mishap

A sedan driven by a priest rammed a concrete fence and overturned twice in the mountain barangay of Sudlon 1, Cebu City past noon yesterday.

Fr. Bernardo Oyao, chaplain of the San Juan Bautista Quasi Parish in sitio Tabla, survived.

He said he considered it a miracle that he came out of the accident without a  scratch.

Fr. Oyao was unconscious when some residents pulled him out of the damaged car, a Mazda 3.

He was later brought to the Perpetual Succour Hospital.

“The doctor asked how serious the accident was. I told him the residents told me that they did not expect that I was still alive because the car was badly damaged,” Fr. Oyao told Cebu Daily News.

At the hospital, Fr. Oyao underwent a CT scan and X-ray examinations.

“Luckily, I did not sustain even a scratch even if the car’s airbag did not function,” added Fr. Oyao.

He went on to celebrate a Mass in his parish church after he was released from the hospital.

The priest was heading to barangay Bonbon to buy mineral water when the accident happened.

Fr. Oyao said he was driving  at  moderate speed when the mishap  occurred.

He said he lost control of the wheel while negotiating a downhill road.

Fr. Oyao recalled that the car flipped twice before he lost consciousness.
