UNIVERSITY of San Carlos-Basic Education Department’s (USC-BED) ace wood pusher Vic Glyzen Derotas ruled the third qualifying tournament of the Cebu School of Chess last weekend at the school’s headquarters along P. del Rosario Avenue in Cebu City.
Derotas, a former National Milo Little Olympics “Most Outstanding Athlete” and also a former national champion of the National Shell Chess Youth Active Chess Championships, finished the seven-round Swiss system competition undefeated with 7.0 points.
Derotas edged Edsel Vosotros in the final round to seal her impressive performance in the tournament.
With the win, Derotas joined other monthly tournament champions Marphine Mangubat, Jeremy Pepito, Chris Aldritz Pondoyo and Angel Naureen Bagano in the grand finals.
