Scholar’s website wins Startup Weekend

SCHOLAR’S Field, a website that provides scholars an easier way to search and apply for scholarships in the Philippines, won this year’s Startup Weekend Cebu.

In second place was Spend Check, a mobile application designed to aid micro-business owners to “spend cash the smart way.”

Teevee, a startup targeted towards making t-shirt vending machines for events, came in third.

These three top startups and seven others got invited to the pre-accelerator program of JFDI.Asia, a startup accelerator from Singapore. The top winner also received two tickets to Geeks on a Beach Conference in Boracay.

Aside from the JFDI invitation, the three top startups also received “swag bags” from Globe Labs and KickStart Ventures, passes to The Tide, and API credits from Globe Labs.

The other seven startups invited to JFDI’s program were Juanderfly, Wavesharing, Fresh Connexion, libre.ph, SoundTrip, Citifier, and Philtrip.

“Only around 12% of the teams go on to create the businesses from the startups,” said Rachel Eilbott, a startup organizer.

“But we at Startup hope you keep in touch and use the networks you’ve made through this event,” she added.

Timmy de Jesus, lead organizer of StartupWeekend Cebu 2015, said startups in Cebu usually tend towards mobile development applications.

All 14 startups that were developed during the event last weekend had a technology component.

She also said “majority of the startups this year are social impact solutions” and about a third of the participants were students.
