FOR THE LEAD

Beermen eye solo top spot, face Elite

Games today:
Smart-Araneta
4:15 p.m. – San Miguel vs Blackwater
7 p.m. – Purefoods Star vs Talk N Text

The white-hot San Miguel Beermen aim for the solo lead in the standings when they battle the ousted Blackwater Elite in the PBA Governors’ Cup today at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Easily the hottest team in the league, the Beermen hope to make it eight wins in a row  and qualify for a  twice-to-beat privilege in the next round.

San Miguel hopes to shake off some rust after a week-long break. Its last game was a 101-96 triumph over the Talk N Text Tropang Texters last June 9.

However, San Miguel remains to be the odds-on favorite in this match, especially with reinforcement Arizona Reid clicking on all cylinders typified by his 29 points last time out that helped the squad rally from a 17-point first half deficit.

Still, the Elite will not go down easily as they showed in their 91-98 loss to the Texters, a game that saw them go ahead by 16 points before coming up short in crunchtime.

Cebu’s Brian Heruela will be a marked man today as he kept his incredible rookie season going with 21 points against Talk ’N Text.

In the second game, the Texters look to build on their previous victory when they take on the reeling Star Hotshots at 7 p.m.

The reigning champions suffered their fifth loss in eight games when they got blasted by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 88-103, in their last game.
