A 60-YEAR-OLD job order worker was killed after the government dump truck he and his fellow workers rode fell off a cliff in Ginatilan town, southwest Cebu.
The truck driver, Rex Bitong, 46, blamed a mechanical problem for the accident that killed Alexander Lavares.
Injured were Bitong Damasito Polpol, 48; and Eduardo Fernandez, 40.
Police said the workers were supposed to haul some tents that were used in a medical mission and inauguration of a covered court in barangay Cagsing.
Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III attended the inauguration held last Tuesday.
Bitong said he was driving uphill when the steering wheel locked up.
The truck overturned three times after it fell off the cliff, said SPO1 Vicente Rama, investigator of the Ginatilan Police Station.
A coconut tree prevented the truck from falling to the bottom.
Polpol who was riding at the back of the truck jumped off but not Lavares.
Lavares was found unconscious at the back of the truck. He died on the way to a hospital in Cebu City.
Injured workers were treated at the health center of Ginatilan.
Police said the driver was detained after the accident.
