MORE than 200 people collected over 100 sacks of garbage at the coastal area of the South Road Properties (SRP) yesterday morning.

The cleanup, spearheaded by the Movement for a Livable Cebu (MLC), drew volunteers from civil society organizations to help clean up the 700-meter coastline near Il Corso of Filinvest Land Inc. from 6 am to 8 am yesterday.

“There’s a lot of garbage here and it’s not good for sanitation purposes and also this is one of the most beautiful areas of the city and if it’s dirty, it can’t be a tourist spot,” MLC convenor Marc Canton said.

The garbage was placed in trucks provided by Cebu City Hall’s Department of Public Services (DPS).

Proserfina Siguenza, founder of the group Ipasigarbo ta ang Pasil (IPTAP) also joined the activity.

She said their group supported the event because Pasil is located near the mouth of the Guadalupe River, which ends in the coastal area.

“This is symbolic because there are people concerned about the environment. But we should not stop here. This is at most palliative. Cleanliness should be the concern of everybody,” she said.

Monico Mosley, a 19-year-old volunteer of the United Kingdom’s Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) group, joined the activity to raise awareness on the deaf community.

“We wanted to make the most of our time here so we decided to join in. There’s a lot to do so we just want to do as much as possible,” she said.

The volunteers also donated school supplies to the children of the Umapad dumpsite.
