Scholars gripe on delay in tuition refund

FIVE scholars of Britech College sought assistance from the Cebu City Scholarship Committee to resolve the delays in the school’s refund of their tuition after they were advised twice to transfer to other schools.

The complaint letter by scholars Shiela Mhae Arellano, Adelyn Marie Cobarde, Mary Ann Medida, Dale Rago, and Angelou Velasquez were addressed to City Councilor Alvin Dizon, who chairs the City Council’s education committee.

The five scholars were enrolled in a four-year Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) course in Britech College.

They said the school told them that only their first two years were accredited by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

They were advised to transfer to the University of Visayas (UV) and were assured that their tuition will be paid for.

After enrollment, they were assured in a letter by Engr. Nicolas Baguio, president of Britech College, that their tuition will be paid until they graduate at UV without shifting to other courses.

But last June 11, Britech College met with the scholars and advised them to transfer to Southwestern University (SWU) to reduce their expenses.

They withdrew their enrollment at UV and were refunded P65 each for their P500 enrollment fee. The scholars said they used their own money to enroll in UV.

When they tried to meet with Baguio last Monday, they were told he was out but were assured that they would be refunded P30,000 for their tuition in SWU.

Their complaint will be included in the Cebu City Council’s session this Wednesday.
