Fernan bridge to be closed for repairs

More than a month before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, motorists can expect yet another traffic inconvenience ahead of the event.

Eda de Guzman of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 6th Engineering District Office said they will close the bridge to replace its rubber expansion joints at a cost of P30 million.

She made the disclosure during yesterday’s meeting of Mactan Cebu Bridge Management Board (MCBMB).

De Guzman said they may start the project either this week or by next week in time for the APEC summit on August 22.
De Guzman said they will close each lane for seven days.

The first lane to be closed will be the outer lane beside the sidewalk towards the Mandaue City side, followed by the inner lane beside the center island also towards Mandaue City side.

The next lanes to be closed are the outer lane beside the sidewalk towards Mactan side and the inner lane beside the center island towards the Mactan side.

De Guzman said they will first remove the damaged rubber expansion joints then install steel finger type expansion joints.

She said they are targeting to complete the project in a month.

Engr. Pericles Dakay, vice chairman of the MCBDB, asked de Guzman that the crews avoid placing their equipment on the side to reduce traffic.

De Guzman said repairs on the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge is completed.
