Foreign squads shine in 2nd Int’l Rugby Cup

Visiting teams made some noise yesterday in the 2nd Annual International Cebu Ladies 10’s Rugby Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).

The Hong Kong Kukris and the Gai Wu Rugby Football Club (RFC) both scored three wins to advance to the next round.

The HK Kukris RFC edged the Manila Mayhem in their opening match, 17-0, crossing the football beyond the goal line three times to earn 15 points and added two points coming off a conversion kick. The Kukris added another win after trouncing Chinese University of Hong Kong RFC,12-7. They extended their winning streak to three by prevailing over NTU Women’s Rugby, 10-5.

The Kukris then saw their streak snapped after to Gai Wu RFC, 5-22. They again faltered against the Cebu Lady Dragons, 0-12.

Gai WU RFC, on the other hand, bounced back strong from a loss to the Valley Meerkats in their opening match, 7-12, by winning all of their remaining matches.

They trampled hosts Cebu Lady Dragons RFC, 12-0, Manila Mayhem, 22-0 and NTU Rugby Women’s Team, 22-0.

The Cebu Lady Dragons, manned by three Cebuana players who helped the Philippine Lady Volcanoes win a bronze in the recent SEA Games in Singapore,  snatched two wins yesterday to improve to 2-3 (win-loss).

They first defeated the HK Lady Kukris, 12-0, then downed the Manila Mayhem, 10-0.
