THE Gilligan’s Sisig Queens pair of Cebuana spiker Danika Gendrauli and Norie Diaz failed to sustain their momentum as they fell to the Foton Hurricane’s pair of Bea Tan and Pau Soriano, 21-18, 18-21, 12-15 yesterday in the PLDT Home Ultera-Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup at the Sands By the Bay in SM Mall of Asia.
Former Ateneo star Bea Tan nailed a beautiful drop shot down the stretch before watching Danica Genrauli commit a pair of miscues to complete the victory that sent the Hurricane to the quarterfinal round.
In other matches, Petron XCS of Charo Soriano and Gretchen Ho crushed Accel Quantum Plus B Perpetual Molino of Aurora Tripoli and Rochet Dela Paz, 21-7, 21-9, while Petron Sprint 4T of head-turners Alexa Micek and Fille Cayetano eliminated Cignal HD Spikers A of Cha Cruz and Michelle Laborte, 22-20, 21-15.
The Hurricane topped Group D regardless of the outcome of their game against the HD Spikers A later in the day.
The winner between Petron Sprint 4T and Gilligan’s on the other hand, will be the second seed in quarters which starts next Saturday.
The Hurricane started slow bugged by unforced errors and service miscues that allowed the Sisig Queens to take the first set.
But the second set was an entirely different story as Tan caught fire in the service box while Soriano, stunned Gendrauli and Diaz with impeccable reception and floor defense.
The Hurricane also scored big on the Sisig Queens’ miscues.
With the game tied at 12 in the deciding set, Tan scored on a place shot. As Gendrauli tried to fight back, her attacks fell short, giving the Hurricane the top spot in the quarterfinals.
