THE Cebu City Police is encouraging students to monitor and report illegal drug activities to help minimize the problem.
An awareness campaign against illegal drugs was conducted early this month by the police at the City Central Night High School.
“The school is a top priority for our illegal drug awareness campaign. These students here are usually from the drug-infested barangays like Ermita, Kamagayan and Sambag Dos,” said Supt. Enrique Belciña, head of the Police Community Relations (PCR).
More than 200 students participated in the seminar that he conducted in the school recently as part of the celebration of PCR Month.
The participants were Grades 9 and 10 students of City Central Night High School. A separate session was also conducted for Grades 7 and 8 students.
“Being at their age is crucial since peer pressure might push them toward using illegal drugs. That is why they should know how illegal drug use can affect a person,” he said.
Belciña said the conduct of the seminar is their contribution to the intensified campaign of the Police Regional Office Central Visayas (PRO-7) against illegal drugs.
It would help their campaign for “demand reduction,” Belciña added.
“This is also one way to educate them of the ill-effects of drugs use. We let them see a film entitled Bawal Na Gamot which contains varied testimonies of celebrities about illegal drug use and how can one possibly avoid the vice,” he said. Ma Theresa Encarnacion, Math teacher and guidance counselor, was grateful for the
seminar. She said it was the first time that such an activity was held in their school.
