The medical team tasked to ensure safety in the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines is making sure that all bases are covered for the big event slated this Sunday in Cebu.

The race starts at Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City but the race route reaches the cities of Mandaue, Cebu and Talisay.

Because of the scope of the event,  Dr. Peter Mancao, medical director of the race, is making sure his team is ready.

“We must be 100 percent ready. Accidents can happen but we must prevent them from happening,” he said.

To achieve this goal, the medical team gears its focus on finalizing the paramedic units that will be deployed during the event.  He said the main focus of the volunteers is to ensure the safety of the athletes and spectators.

Dr. Mancao said that they are coordinating with the volunteer nurses and doctors who are tasked to ensure  the well-being and  medical safety of the competitors.  He added that they are making arrangements with the different ambulances that will be spread in strategic locations.

Mancao said the official hospital in case of emergencies is Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City. But they have also notified along-the-road hospitals for the immediate care of the victims should an accident happen in their area.

The team is also preparing for the possible effects of changing weather conditions. These include dehydration,  heat strokes, among others.

But common incidents during race day are road accidents throughout the bike leg.
