Woman facing trafficking charges

A woman is facing trial for allegedly hiring and exposing a 13-year-old girl to prostitution in 2013.

The Cebu City Prosecutors’ Office found sufficient evidence to indict Michelle Gijan on charges of qualified trafficking.

No bail was recommended for the accused, who remains at large.

Prosecutor Aurora Peñaflor gave Gijan an opportunity to submit a counter-affidavit and refute the allegations.

The accused did not respond to the accusations.

“From the uncontroverted evidence submitted, it is sufficient to engender a well-founded belief that the respondents violated the applicable provisions of the laws,” said Peñaflor in her resolution.

The victim claimed she was recruited by the accused to have sex with men in exchange for money sometime in August 2013.

At that time, she said she needed money because her sister was sick and was confined in the hospital.
