The Cebu City Council is asking the Mayor’s Office to immediately implement the removal or deactivation of the cell site tower of Globe Telecommunications in barangay Apas.
The council’s move came after they saw no action from Globe since the telecommunications firm’s permits were revoked two months ago by the council.
The revocation order last May 27 gave Globe two months to remove their tower.
The deadline lapsed last July 27.
The City Council revoked the special permits of Globe Telecom and Digitel Mobile Phils. ( Sun Cellular) for their towers in sitio Calvary Hills after residents complained that they were health hazards due to exposure to radiation, and that their installation was done without prior consultation or consent of the community.
Sun Cellular filed a motion for reconsideration of the council’s decision.
“Since Globe hasn’t filed a motion of reconsideration, it’s now final and executory. We ask the mayor’s office to cause the dismantling, demolition or deactivation of the cell site tower,” said councilor Sisinio Andales during their regular session last Wednesday.
Cebu Daily News tried to get a comment from Globe Telecommunications but there was no reply from their chief legal officer Froilan Castelo.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said the matter regarding the cell site is still being reviewed by the City Legal Office.
The Council’s move last Wednesday came after the body discussed the motion for reconsideration filed by Sun Cellular.
In their motion, Sun Cellular said the council showed grave abuse of discretion when it revoked their permits without due process and that the city’s zoning ordinance doesn’t provide for guidelines of revoking permits.
The motion was referred to Councilor Noel Wenceslao for review.
He was the one who sponsored the resolution revoking the permits of the two telecommunication companies.
Both telcos were given special use permits by City Hall before since the area where they put up their towers is located in the residential area of sitio Calvary Hills.
The permits were approved in 2000.
