Still after Grace

By: Ricky Poca August 18,2015 - 01:03 AM

The Liberal Party is courting Sen. Grace Poe as its  vice presidential candidate  but at the same time try to question her residency qualification and citizenship.

Many could question the sincerity of LP leaders. For me,  it just goes to show that what’s important  to the party is basically  to serve its political interests.

With Poe still undecided about the offer, the Liberal Party is seriously looking at Rep.  Leni Robredo, with the hope that the   widow of the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo  would help balance out Roxas’ elitist image and gain the trust of the masses.

But Malacañang has not  given up on Poe yet who has topped recent surveys and was the senator with the highest votes in the  last election.

But little by little Poe is being attacked by  propagandists of some interested political  personalities and parties with the end in view of making her appear vulnerable.

Recently Mar Roxas has been making his presence felt in different provinces.  Here in Cebu,  his latest visit was met with some controversy especially in the first district.

In Talisay City,  he was surrounded by two warring but potential candidates –  Mayor JVR and Vice Mayor Romeo Villarante.

Roxas also made a  controversial statement, voicing his support for Rep. Samsam Gullas of the Alayon Party. This place in an awkward position a loyal Liberal Party leader Mayor Abe Canoy, who plans to run for the congressional seat against Gullas.

Roxas should be cautious with his pronouncements. He  may be unnecessarily creating enemies this early which would not help his political ambition.

Roxas should just make his rounds and meet people so the public gets to know him better.  But he should refrain from making decisions about local politics this early.

If  he makes the same mistakes he did  in the previous election, he is doomed to fail in his political aspiration. He shouldn’t turn his back on loyal party members.

Malacañang Palace is justifying the delay in the acceptance of the resignation of Secretary Mar Roxas from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), saying he has to prepare for the transition.

Apparently this has left a bad image for the presidential bet. Now talks have circulated that the resignation was all for show  and that he ha no intention to actually step aside. As Cabinet Secretary, Roxas can go around the country using all the resources of the government.

Roxas should have submitted an irrevocable resignation to show to everyone that he is really resigning and has no intention to use his office for early campaigning.

Apparently he did not; now his sincerity and intention is being questioned.

A big event is happening in Cebu in August to October—the series of meetings of senior officials and ministers of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

I wonder who is is staying on top of this.

From reports I gathered last Tuesday, it’s not clear what are the requirements for buses and coasters needed by APEC delegates, as confirmed by a friend who is in the car rental business and Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale.

Car rental operators don’t know what to expect. They said it won’t be easy to prepare their vehicles for the event on short notice. Seat covers take a few days to wash and clean. Vehicles need to be checked by mechanics.

(In a press conference on Wednesday in Cebu City, Ambassador Marciano Paynor said the national committee is bringing in from Manila 100 Grandia vans, 50 BMWs and several police vehicles. –Editor)
