Former Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) men’s football champion, University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars showedthey have regained their fearsome form yesterday by humbling defending champions, University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 2-1, at the start of the CESAFI football tournament at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) field.
USJ-R, the 2013 title holders, opened the match with relentless attacks that resulted in Eugene Vicente’s goal at the 12th minute.
The Kicking Jaguars made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute when Neil Ryant Miñoza utilized his teammate’s missed attempt with a perimeter conversion straight to an unguarded goal.
USC showed signs of life early in the second when Jules Villahermosa’s header found the back of the net in the 59th minute from a pass by teammate Miguel Kwan.
USJ-R also beat USC in the 2013 championship match via shoot-out.
In the other collegiate division match, the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters opened their campaign for the football crown with a dominating, 4-0 win over the University of the Visayas (UV) highlighted by Nigerian Famous Ene Azibataran’s three goals.
Famous scored his goals at the 3rd, 18th and 67th minutes while Mark Joseph Felicilda added one goal at the 16th minute.
Meanwhile, high school division defending champion, Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) overwhelmed USJ-R in their first meeting, 8-0.
The team’s ace player, Thomas Ramos had a sterling game scoring four goals. Ramos nailed goals at the 36th,39th,44th and 62nd minutes while teammate Agustin Roa opened the Bosconians scoring spree at the 21st minute. Carlos Jubac added one goal at the 57th minute.
