USC spikers cruise to 2nd straight win

The University of San Carlos Warriors remained unbeaten in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) boys volleyball competition after crushing winless Don Bosco Technology Center Greywolves in straight sets yesterday, 25-8, 25-11 at the University of San Jose-Recoletos gym.

The Warriors jumped to a, 14-4 start and never looked back. Don Bosco burned all their timeouts early in the first set to stop the bleeding but the Baby Warriors, the defending champions, proved too tough for the young Greywolves who finished the game with a measly total of just 23 points.

USC Head Coach Junrey Sasing said that the Warriors are composed mostly of rookies but their solid work ethic played a major role in their victory. USC improved to 2-0 in the team standings.

Meanwhile, host USJ-R boys division spikers failed to sustain their winning start by bowing to the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers, 23-25, 21-25. USPF had the Jaguars number from the start establishing a commanding lead midway in the first set.

USJ-R mounted a comeback late in the second set but it was too little, too late as USP-F got a huge lift from Salvador who also made the game winning spike.

Coach Jayson Gabales of USPF said their floor defense helped them grab the win against an offensive-minded Jaguars team. He added that the Panthers are gunning for a Finals spot this year.

USPF is now tied with USJ-R in the boys division with 1-1 win-loss cards.

On the distaff side, the University of San Carlos rebounded from their loss to SWU by thrashing University of Southern Philippines, 25-21, 25-11 while Southwestern University clobbered the inexperienced Cebu Eastern College, 25-10, 25-9. The University of San Jose-Recoletos kicked off their season by beating Ateneo de Cebu, 25-22, 25-18.

Girls action will open tomorrow’s schedule with USP-F taking on CEC and SWU facing Ateneo de Cebu while the boys schedule pit USJ-R vs USC and USP-F vs DBTC.
