The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars try to right what is quickly becoming a sinking ship when they face off versus the winless University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Panthers in the 15th Cesafi men’s basketball competition today at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Jaguars actually started strong this season, winning two of their first three games. However, their season-opening victory over the University of Cebu (UC) was forfeited after it was found out that they have not submitted their electrocardiogram results – a requirement in the league this year.
From then on, USJ-R have gone on a downward spiral, losing two straight games capped by a 75-90 defeat at the hands of the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors to fall to 1-4 (win-loss), second worst in the tournament right above their opponents this evening.
Adding insult to injury is the subpar play of Kevin Villafranca. A Mythical Five team member last year, the Negros-native has gone cold for most of this season.
In USJ-R’s game against USC, one that the Jaguars needed to win, the 6-foot-4 forward with the soft touch managed just six points.
BABY WARRIORS EYE 5-0
In the juniors division, the USC Baby Warriors aim to stay unbeaten heading to their prime match-up with the defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) on Monday when they tangle with the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens.
The wards of head coach Britt Reroma have gone unbeaten in four games but a win today will tie them with the idle Magis Eagles, who stand with a 5-0 card.
