Though in the thick of preparations for the ongoing men’s basketball tournament of the Cebu School Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers still made time for a noble cause after they visited a drug rehabilitation center in barangay Gunob, Lapu-Lapu City last Saturday.
The team’s players and coaches played a friendly game against some of the drug dependents sheltered at the House of Hope.
“The main objective of the team is to really reach out to the community. It is part of the university’s vision-mission and goals. The UV Green Lancers is not just a team determined to win games on court but also, as a team, we take pride in making a difference in the lives of many, especially to the challenged sector of our society,” said Van Halen Parmis, one of the assistant coaches of the Green Lancers.
Parmis said the players also learned some valuables lessons from the visit.
“The experience became an eye-opener for all the players. It made them realize what destruction drugs can do, appreciate sports all the more and above all, recognize God,” shared Parmis.
During the visit, the Green Lancers donated basketballs.
“We also invited them to watch our games in the Cesafi. We asked for their support because with this, it will ignite their love for sports which is one great diversion for the dependents to live a cleaner and healthier lifestyle,” said Parmis.
