APEC cops contract sore eyes

Several police officers securing the senior officials’ meetings for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in Cebu have suffered from sore eyes, state television reported on Monday.

Quoting Cebu-based Dr. Wyben Briones, founding president of the All-Terrain Medical Relief Organization (Amro), People’s Television (PTV) reported that about 200 policemen were treated for minor ailments such as sore eyes and heat exhaustion.

Those suffering from sore eyes were told to limit contact and exposure to the public. This condition, which is characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva and sometimes causes pus-like discharge, is contagious.

The policemen are billeted at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City, which has no air-conditioning.

There has been a spike of sore eyes cases in parts of the country recently. The Department of Health has advised frequent handwashing and observance of proper hygiene.

PTV also reported that 183 Apec delegates, personnel and ordinary hotel guests have been treated for minor ailments since August 19. Most suffered from hypertension or common colds.
