CCSC chairman Hayco wants free proper basketball training for Cebuano youth
In its bid to discover potential talents from all sporting events, the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) recently added the country’s most famous sport to its grassroots development program.
Basketball is like a religion in the Philippines but not all enthusiasts get proper training. This is why CCSC chairman Edward Hayco was determined to include the sport in their grassroots development program.
The program for basketball is held every weekend at the Cebu City Sports Institute (CCSI) in Barangay Sawang Calero, Cebu City. The CCSC plans to bring it to public schools around the city soon but there are minor problems that hinder the plan.
One of it is the shortage of volunteers, particularly public school teachers, student athletes and university basketball team coaches, as of the moment.
“It’s more of a trial period for the program but we won’t stop there. We follow a certain kind of principle of giving up if we encounter challenges along the way. For us, it’s like a warm up stage before we continue our plans for the Cebuano youth’s development on sports,” Hayco said.
He said that he will coordinate with more volunteers and private university coaches to keep the program going.
Hayco is optimistic that the program will be successful since his partnership with private university coaches and public school teachers for other sporting events before have resulted to success.
“There’s a lot of factors along the way but if you remember, it took us five years to establish a world class team like the Dancesports Team Cebu City so we have to be patient because it’s a very tough job,” Hayco added.
Hayco is also the man behind Cebu’s record-breaking feat in sports like the biggest dance class, biggest chess tournament and biggest archery class, all inducted in the annals of the Guinness Book of World Records.
The CCSC’s grassroots program is regularly held at the CCSI and is free to all Cebuano youth who want to hone their skills in their desired sports.
