Teacher shot dead by gunmen in Argao

A public school teacher was shot dead  on his way home from a cockfight in Argao town, south Cebu,  late Sunday afternoon.

Allan Campaner Albert, 33, a Grade 5 teacher of the Usmad Elementary School,  was driving his  motorcycle on his way home to barangay Usmad when two motorcycle-riding men attacked him in barangay Panadtaran.

Senior Insp. Alejandro Batobalonos said that Albert came from a cockpit in barangay Talaga where he reportedly won in a cockfight.

From the cockpit, Albert dropped by  Argao public market to buy feeds for his livestocks before going home.

Two men on a motorbike followed the victim and shot him upon reaching barangay Panadtaran.

Panadtaran and Usmad are two adjacent mountain barangays of Argao.

The backrider drew a .45 caliber gun from his waistband and shot Albert twice in the back.

According to witnesses, the victim and his motorcycle fell into a canal.

The gunman alighted from the motorcycle and  fired twice at the  teacher’s face.

Policemen later found  two empty shells and one slug from a .45 caliber handgun at the scene.

During a police interview, the victim’s wife, Emy Rose,  revealed that Albert had a grudge with his neighbor in barangay Talaytay.

Albert is a native of barangay Talaytay but he and his family settled in barangay Usmad.

“Mibahad gani kuno to’ng tawhana nga dili lang niya ipaabot sa barangay ang ilang away kay mobawos”, Batobalonos said.

(The neighbor reportedly said he would  not bring their conflict to the barangay officials and threatened to retaliate.)

Albert is survived by hsi wife and their two children.

Batobalonos said the gunmen wore hats and their faces were covered with cloth.

The manner of the attacks indicated that the  crime was carried out by experienced hired killers.
