The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Lady Jaguars kept their immaculate record intact as they beat the University of Cebu (UC) Lady Webmasters, 25-12, 25-10, 25-22, in the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at Aznar Coliseum.
The Lady Jaguars, who won the title last 2007, showed their championship pedigree from the start, surging into a commanding 21-10 lead early in the first set and never looked back to grab their third straight victory without a loss.
USJ-R coach Grace Antigua said their determination played a key role in defeating the hard-fighting belles of UC.
The Lady Jaguars will have a tough task on Sunday as they are scheduled to face the Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras. Antigua remains upbeat on their chances of winning against the defending champions.
“I don’t expect much from my players. All I need is for them to play their best,” Antigua said.
The loss dropped UC to 0-2 (win-loss), tying the Cebu Doctors’ University White Stallions at the bottom of the standings.
In the men’s division, last year’s runner-up USJ-R Jaguars remained unbeaten by outlasting the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 23-25, 28-26, 28-26, 25-11.
USJ-R improved to 2-0 while USC fell to 1-1.
Also in the men’s division, the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Baby Panthers (1-1) barged into the win column by trouncing the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats (0-2), 25-13, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21. The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers (1-0) also started their season on a high note, thrashing the winless UC Webmasters (0-2) 25-18, 25-20, 25-19.
