The Capitol Association of Reporters in Tri-media and the Media Alliance for Law, Liberty, Equality, and Truth (CART-MALLET) and the Defense and Police Press Corps (DEPP) posted separate wins at the start of the 2015 Cebu Press Freedom Volleyball Tournament yesterday at the Cebu Eastern College gym.
CART-MALLET showed up with just six available players but bucked its depleted lineup to defeat the Cebu City Hall Association of Reporters in Media (CHARM), while DEPP bagged its own win at the expense of Media in Cebu South (MICS)/Regional Journalists in Cebu (REJOICE).
On the other hand, Cebu Daily News’ correspondent Apple Mae Taas was adjudged the best muse.
The tournament is one of the highlights of the Cebu Press Freedom celebration which will officially start on Sept. 20.
Elias Baquero, president of the Cebu Federation of Beat Journalists (CFBJ), expressed commitment to support sports development among journalists and foster camaraderie and promote physical fitness.
Aside from volleyball, Baquero said the CFBJ is also supporting the Newsmen Basketball Association of Cebu, which will have another tournament before the year ends.
“We have discussed about business and housing for journalists. But the CFBJ is also well-aware about the need to support sports development for those working in the media. And so we decided to reserve funds for sports activities,” said Baquero in the opening ceremony.
