4 killed as bikes hit toppled tree

A beach outing of six friends ended in tragedy after the motorcycles they were riding hit a fallen mango tree blocking  the road in Tuburan town, northern Cebu.

Clark Anthony Enguilo, 18, was killed on the spot along with  Rallyboy Dacaldacal, 18; Jusver Bulat-ag, 27; and Elizar Dacaldacal Jr..

They suffered severed head injuries, said P03 Roberto Rondina, investigator of the Tuburan Police Station.

Their friends, Isagani Moncada Sasis and Rex Martil Moncada Sasis, 22, sustained minor injuries. They were  discharged after getting treatment at the Tuburan District Hospital.

None of the six victims were wearing crash helmets.

The riders came from Molobolo Spring in Tuburan town and were heading home to barangay Old Bago in Asturias town aboard separate motorcycles when the accident took place 11:30 p.m. last Wednesday.

It was not immediately known which one was  driving the motorcycles.

The drivers may have failed to notice the toppled tree blocking the road.

Police said the area was dark  because the streetlight was damaged by the fallen tree.

Police said some witnesses described the  two motorcycles as  running at high speed.

The victims were pinned under the tree when rescuers arrived.

The mango tree had  toppled at around 10 p.m.  after   continuous rains may have loosened the soil, said the police.

The  fallen tree obstruction was not  immediately reported to municipal authorities, who have equipment to  clear the road of the obstruction.
