Cebuana pair of UST starts title defense

THE CEBUANA tandem of Cherry Rondina and Rica Rivera start their bid for a second straight crown with the University of Santo Tomas (UST) as the UAAP Season 78 beach volleyball tournament kicks off today (Friday) at the Sands SM By The Bay inside the Mall of Asia complex.
Showing tremendous composure beyond their years, Rondina, a proud product of Compostela National High School, and Rivera, an alumnus of the University of San Jose-Recoletos, captured last season’s crown with a victory over La Salle.
They start their campaign for a repeat title today against Adamson at 8 a.m. before coming back at 12 noon to take on National University.
The road to the title will be littered with plenty of challenges starting with La Salle, which will be represented by another Cebuana, Cyd Demecillo, formerly of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, and Kim Fajardo.
Ateneo on the other hand, has the sport’s brightest star, Alyssa Valdez, and Bea Tan. A beach volleyball crown is what Valdez is only missing in her decorated collegiate career, while Tan’s vast experience in the sand court will greatly help the Lady Eagles.
