CUC head Galon sets two free races

CEBU Ultrarunners Club (CUC) president and founder Tony C. Galon will organize two running events in Cebu that will be free of charge.

Both fun runs won’t have registration fees because both are done for a cause. The two events are the Five Pieces Run slated Oct. 24 and the Typhoon Yolanda Ultramarathon set for Nov. 7.

Galon, one of the pioneering ultra marathoners in Cebu, said the reason why he isn’t asking for registration fees is because he wants to attract more participants who can help him with his advocacy, especially with the Five Pieces Run.

This run-for-a-cause, which starts at the City Times Square in Mandaue City, will cover an eight-kilometer stretch en route to the finish line at the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. Galon said runners will have to help him pick up trash from along the route of the event. By doing this, he hopes other individuals will do the same for the sake of cleanliness.

“Everyone can join as long as they are willing to pick up pieces of trash,” Galon said. “I encourage the participants of this run to pick up five pieces of trash just like what I do everyday as a daily habit.”

The Typhoon Yolanda Ultramarathon, on the other hand, will  start at the Cebu Provincial Capitol grounds and finish in Bogo City, northern Cebu.

This run is held in remembrance of the those who suffered during supertyphoon that ravaged Eastern Visayas and northern Cebu last Nov. 8, 2013.

Although no registration fee is required, Galon said he may request runners to contribute a little for the support group that will assist them along the route going to Bogo.

Galon isn’t new to holding running events  for a cause. He is also known for staging the annual All-Women’s Ultramarathon (AWUM) and also spearheaded a running event for the 44 Special

Action Force (SAF) operatives who perished in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last January.
