THE SOUTHWESTERN University Spiking Cobras (SWU) dropped their first assignment in the 20th Philippine University Games (UniGames) after losing to the home team, University of St. La Salle Stingers (USLS), 25-17, 26-28, 21-25, 29-27, 12-15, in the men’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the Bay Center in Bacolod City.
SWU showed its championship pedigree at the starting bell en route to an opening set victory. USLS, boosted by its home-court advantage, then took the next two sets to get in the driver’s seat.
The Cobras forced a deciding set after grinding out a 29-27 win in set number four but the Stingers were too much for the Cebuano squad as they cruised to a 15-12 victory in the final frame.
SWU head coach Dave Arreza said that the Cobras were too complacent after winning the first set.
“This is still the first game and we’re still adjusting with the court and playing venue,” said the soft-spoken Arreza.
The Cobras will try to get into the winning column as they face Ateneo de Davao University today at 10:40 a.m.
In men’s football, Cebu representatives University of San Jose-Recoletos Kicking Jaguars also suffered a 0-6 blowout loss against the Ceres-backed USLS.
