SWU volleyball teams bag huge wins in Bacolod

Cebu’s volleyball powerhouse Southwestern University (SWU) kept their championship hopes alive in the 20th Philippine University Games (UniGames) as they registered separate victories yesterday at the BTTHS Gym in Bacolod City.

Pulling off a monumental upset was SWU’s men’s team, which crushed UAAP powerhouse De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), 21-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-20.

With the victory, the Spiking Cobras brightened their chances of making it to the semifinals as they now hold a 2-1 (win-loss) card.

The reigning Cesafi men’s champion Spiking Cobras are set to face the University of Mindanao-Tagum (UM-T) at 2 p.m. today at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) gym.

Not to be outdone, the SWU Lady Cobras, also the Cesafi women’s champions, relied on their teamwork and chemistry to sneak past the potent squad of Jose Maria College (JMC), 27-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-19.

The Lady Cobras now have an even record of 1-1.

“What really helped us pull off the win was our teamwork, cooperation and aggressiveness,” said multi-titled SWU coach Jordan Paca.

The Lady Cobras will look to make it two wins in a row when they take on the home team University of St. La Salle (USLS) Lady Stingers today at 10:40 a.m.

Paca hopes his squad will learn from this experience, considering they are facing top-caliber teams from the UAAP and Mindanao.

“I expect the team to be matured inside the court. I want them not to be intimidated and just enjoy the game.”
